Herbstsend in Münster Thrills Visitors Despite Wind and Rain

Münster recently launched the Herbstsend festival, despite challenging weather conditions marked by wind and light rain. The festival opened on October 25, 2023, at the Schlossplatz, attracting a large crowd eager to partake in the region’s largest fair.

Celebrating Tradition Amidst Adverse Weather

Running until November 2, 2023, the Herbstsend features around 180 exhibitors providing an array of attractions. Organizers reported a smooth opening day, with no incidents, thanks to efficient security measures. Guests faced minimal waiting times despite stringent bag checks and a prohibition on glass bottles.

Exciting New Attractions

This year, the festival introduces several new rides:

  • Gladiator: A thrilling 62-meter tall ride featuring stunning light displays.
  • Piraten-Fluss: A new family-friendly water ride.
  • Münster-Autoscooter: Unveiled in vibrant city colors and decorated with local motifs.

Alongside these new attractions, classic rides remain popular. Favorites like the Disco Jet, the Grand Soleil Ferris wheel, and various children’s carousels continue to evoke a familiar fair atmosphere.

Safety and Visitor Guidance

Ensuring visitor safety has been a priority with a fenced event area. The local security service collaborates with a private firm to conduct thorough checks. Prohibited items include knives, glass bottles, and large backpacks.

To facilitate access, the city encourages the use of public transport, with multiple bus lines stopping near the venue. The Coesfelder Kreuz parking garage offers a Park+Ride service, allowing visitors to park and ride directly into the city center.

Historical Significance and Event Schedule

The Herbstsend boasts a rich history, originating as a church market in the 9th century during Lent. It is now one of three annual Send events in Münster, concluding the fair season and attracting guests from the region.

The festival hours are as follows:

  • Weekdays: 14:00 – 23:00
  • Fridays: 14:00 – 24:00
  • Sundays: 11:00 – 23:00
  • All Saints’ Day (November 1): Opens at 18:00

The highlight of the festival will be the traditional fireworks display on Friday, October 31, at around 21:00.

Looking Ahead

While the weather has been unpredictable, operators remain optimistic for better conditions next week. Forecasts suggest temperatures could reach 17 degrees Celsius, potentially boosting visitor attendance. The city anticipates that up to 250,000 guests may attend the festival.

Attendees are advised to dress for changeable weather and take the time to enjoy the enchanting evening atmosphere, where colorful lights reflect on the wet pavement. The Herbstsend continues to be a vibrant part of Münster’s cultural heritage, showing resilience against the elements over its long history.
