Raiders Commit to New Legacy with Las Vegas HBCU Classic

The Las Vegas Raiders are embracing a new tradition that honors their commitment to diversity. This initiative is highlighted by the inaugural Las Vegas HBCU Classic, held at Allegiant Stadium. The football matchup features two renowned teams, Jackson State and Grambling State.

Raider’s Legacy and HBCU Support

This event is a continuation of the legacy established by late owner Al Davis. Over 80 players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have played with the Raiders, showcasing the franchise’s dedication to diversity. Legendary Hall of Famers such as Willie Brown, Art Shell, and Jerry Rice are among the esteemed alumni of these institutions.

Goals for the Weekend

The Raiders aim to foster a cultural celebration around the HBCU Classic. This includes the participation of school bands and activities for alumni from both Jackson State and Grambling State. “This classic is a continuation of a legacy that Al Davis started,” said Piper Overstreet-White, senior vice president of government and community relations for the Raiders.

  • Grambling State has won 25 SWAC championships, the highest in the conference.
  • Jackson State holds 19 SWAC titles and captured the title in last season’s Celebration Bowl.

Historical Connections and Future Endeavors

The alliance between the Raiders and Grambling extends to their late coach Eddie Robinson. The Al Davis-Eddie Robinson Leadership Academy promotes diversity in NFL coaching. Robinson’s record of 408 wins over 55 seasons at Grambling is a monumental achievement in college football.

Promoting HBCUs Beyond Football

Besides football, the weekend aims to showcase the rich cultures of Grambling and Jackson State. The schools plan to attract potential students by offering a glimpse of the vibrant HBCU game day experience. The “World Famed Tiger Marching Band” and Jackson State’s “Sonic Boom of the South” will perform at a pep rally on Fremont Street in Las Vegas.

Jackson State’s athletic director, Ashley Robinson, noted the marketing potential of such events. “It’s a time for people to see what HBCUs are all about,” he stated, expressing hopes for the event’s continuation in future years.

Preparation and Legacy

Organizers have been preparing for this classic for approximately a year, with the Raiders heavily promoting it within the NFL. Previous attempts at hosting HBCU classics in the Pacific region were made, but the partnership with the Raiders could ensure the event’s longevity.

Grambling’s athletic director Dr. Trayvean Scott emphasized that collaboration is key for success. “We’re working collectively to advance our league forward,” he said, highlighting the joint efforts of both schools and the Raiders.

The support from the Raiders signifies a significant opportunity to elevate the profile of HBCUs on the West Coast. Overstreet-White expressed pride in her role, stating, “There is an entwined legacy with HBCUs and the Raiders.” This partnership promises a brighter future for HBCU representation in prominent sports events.
