Family Faces Rare Dementia: Man Launches Urgent Fundraiser to Help

A man from Hull, Luke Glover, has initiated a fundraising effort to support Alzheimer’s research, motivated by his family’s experience with a rare inherited dementia. He completed the Yorkshire Marathon, successfully raising over £1,500 for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Inspiration Behind the Fundraiser

Luke’s campaign is a tribute to his sister, who is currently cared for at Beechwood Care Centre in Bridlington. The familial form of Alzheimer’s, known as Familial Alzheimer’s Disease (FAD), has deeply impacted his family.

A Personal Connection to Familial Alzheimer’s Disease

FAD accounts for less than 1 percent of all Alzheimer’s cases and is genetically inherited. Tragically, Luke’s father lost his life to this condition when Luke was just 11 years old. Luke faced a 50 percent chance of inheriting the gene but was fortunate to test negative. Unfortunately, his sister was not so lucky and did inherit the condition, necessitating her current care.

Community Support and Awareness

Funds generated through Luke’s marathon efforts will contribute directly to advancing research into the genetic and biological factors of early-onset dementia. Sarah Kirk, the manager of Beechwood Care Centre, praised Luke’s dedication.

  • “His story brings significant awareness to this rare condition,” she said.
  • “We are grateful for the support he offers, highlighting the importance of person-centered care.”

Care Services Offered at Beechwood

Beechwood Care Centre, run by Highgate Care Group, provides specialized support for individuals with advanced dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, and other complex needs. The facility emphasizes a safe and engaging environment for older adults.

Luke’s efforts not only raise critical funds but also help shine a light on the support available for families navigating similar challenges. His commitment reflects the love and resilience families can exhibit in the face of adversity.
