Why I Moved from Wales to England for Free Childcare Benefits

Since 1 September, working parents in England can access 30 hours of funded childcare per week for children aged nine months to four years. This initiative aims to support working families during term time. However, concerns persist about the availability of childcare places and the cost of additional, unfunded hours.

One parent, Robin, has benefitted from this program. She manages to get two days of funded childcare weekly for her one-year-old while she and her husband work part-time. “This makes it much more affordable for someone like me, who’s just a nurse,” she commented. “I don’t have megabucks to afford a home for my family and pay for childcare. Although I’m sad to leave my home, it’s worthwhile for my family’s future.”

Childcare Support in Wales

In contrast, Wales currently lacks childcare funding for children under two years old. However, the Welsh government will implement a program offering 12.5 hours of free childcare weekly for all two to three-year-olds under its Flying Start scheme. By the end of 2024-2025, the scheme is expected to support 15,901 children, representing about 52% of two-year-olds in Wales.

Future Developments in Childcare

The next phase of this program is scheduled for 2025-2026 and is anticipated to benefit an additional 4,000 children. This expansion will be financed by an extra £25 million allocated to the scheme.
