Riley Leonard to Stay as Colts’ Backup Quarterback, Steichen Confirms

In a recent announcement, Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that rookie quarterback Riley Leonard will continue as the backup behind Daniel Jones for their Week 8 matchup against the Tennessee Titans. This decision reflects Leonard’s consistent preparation and performance since joining the team.

Riley Leonard’s Role as Backup Quarterback

Coach Steichen expressed confidence in Leonard’s work ethic, stating, “He’s been preparing, like I’ve said, since he got here.” Leonard has been the second-string quarterback since Anthony Richardson Sr. was injured during pregame warmups in Week 6 and subsequently placed on injured reserve. Richardson will be sidelined for a minimum of four weeks.

Continued Support and Preparation

This weekend marks Leonard’s third game in the backup role. Despite the change in status, he has remained focused and continues to practice with intensity. He draws support and advice from both Jones and Richardson, ensuring he is ready to step in at a moment’s notice.

Changes to the Quarterback Roster

  • Veteran quarterback Brett Rypien was signed to the practice squad after Richardson’s injury.
  • To be active during games, Rypien must be elevated from the practice squad to the gameday roster.
  • An emergency third quarterback must be on the team’s 53-man roster, per NFL rules.

Leonard has not yet played in a regular-season game this year but had a strong preseason performance. In the third preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, he completed 15 of 20 passes for 189 yards, including a 59-yard touchdown, achieving a passer rating of 102.9.

In the previous encounter with the Titans during Week 3, Richardson took over from Jones in the game’s closing moments, contributing to the Colts’ 41-20 victory.
