Miguel Cairo Interviewed for Nationals’ Manager Position
The managerial search for the Washington Nationals is gaining momentum after a period of inactivity. Following a near month of silence, reports have surfaced about potential candidates for the team’s vacant managerial position. Notably, former Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde was mentioned as a possible candidate. However, it appears Miguel Cairo remains a serious contender.
Miguel Cairo Interviewed for Nationals’ Manager Position
Recent information from Andrew Golden of The Washington Post revealed that Miguel Cairo, the interim manager from the previous season, was one of three candidates interviewed for the job. Cairo’s experience, alongside others, points to a significant evaluation by the Nationals’ leadership.
Interviewed Candidates
- Miguel Cairo – Interim manager for the Nationals in 2024.
- Brandon Hyde – Former manager of the Baltimore Orioles.
- Craig Albernaz – Bench coach for the Cleveland Guardians.
Cairo’s candidacy is strengthened by his extensive coaching background. After serving as a special assistant to the Cincinnati Reds’ general manager, he transitioned to bench coach for the Reds and later held positions with the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox. Before joining the Nationals, he served as the minor league field coordinator for the New York Mets.
Craig Albernaz’s Coaching Journey
Craig Albernaz started his career with the Tampa Bay Rays, where he managed various minor league teams. In 2018, he was recognized as the Midwest League Manager of the Year. Albernaz moved on to the San Francisco Giants as a bullpen and catching coach before joining the Guardians, where he eventually became their associate manager.
With Cairo, Hyde, and Albernaz confirmed as candidates, the Nationals are making progress in identifying their next manager. President of baseball operations Paul Toboni is reportedly narrowing down his options as the team looks to solidify leadership for the upcoming season.
