PHIVOLCS Reports 33 Volcanic Earthquakes at Taal Volcano

Recent reports from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) indicate heightened activity at Taal Volcano in Batangas. On Sunday, a total of 33 volcanic earthquakes were recorded.

Volcanic Activity Overview

Taal Volcano experienced three minor eruptions on the same day, categorized as one phreatic and two phreatomagmatic events. The duration of these eruptions ranged from one to four minutes.

Types of Eruptions

  • Phreatomagmatic Eruption: This type occurs due to the interaction of magma and water. It often features multiple explosive events with varying intervals.
  • Phreatic Eruption: Identified as a steam-driven explosion, it occurs when magma heats surface water or ground material.

Gas Emissions and Volcanic Plumes

On the same day, Taal Volcano emitted approximately 436 tonnes of sulfur dioxide. This release resulted in large plumes rising up to 2,100 meters before drifting southwest.

Current Alert Level

The Alert Level 1, indicating low-level unrest, is currently in effect for Taal Volcano. PHIVOLCS has stressed the importance of safety measures in the area.

Safety Precautions

To ensure public safety, PHIVOLCS has outlined several key prohibitions:

  • Entry into Taal Volcano Island, classified as a Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ).
  • Prohibition of boating and habitation on Taal Lake.
  • Restrictions on aircraft flying near the volcano.

Potential Hazards

Taal Volcano poses various hazards, including:

  • Steam-driven explosions and volcanic earthquakes.
  • Minor ashfall.
  • Lethal accumulations of volcanic gas.

The situation at Taal Volcano remains closely monitored, with updates provided by PHIVOLCS as necessary. Residents and visitors in the vicinity are urged to heed safety warnings and remain vigilant.
