SF Giants Reunite with Versatile Catcher on Minor League Deal

The San Francisco Giants have taken a key step in their offseason roster management by re-signing versatile catcher Logan Porter to a minor league contract. This strategic move is instrumental in bolstering their catching depth as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Logan Porter Returns to SF Giants

According to reports from Bob Nightengale of USA Today, Porter will also receive an invitation to spring training. This will give him the opportunity to showcase his skills and compete for a spot on the major league roster.

Current Catcher Roster

Porter joins a competitive group of catchers in the organization, which includes:

  • Patrick Bailey
  • Andrew Knizner
  • Jesús Rodríguez

Additionally, Adrián Sugastey and Drew Cavanaugh are set to provide catching depth in the upper minors, potentially earning spring training invites as well. Maintaining depth at the catcher position has been a priority for the Giants, and their efforts last season reflect that commitment.

Challenges in 2025

The Giants faced a challenging moment in June 2025 when Patrick Bailey was placed on the injured list due to a neck strain. During that stretch, Logan Porter filled in on the active roster, while Knizner assumed the primary catching duties. Thankfully, Bailey returned after a brief absence of ten days.

Porter’s Performance

In the previous season with the Sacramento River Cats, Porter excelled behind the plate, recording a .214 batting average with six home runs and 29 RBIs across 286 plate appearances. His statistics indicate:

  • On-base percentage: .346
  • Slugging percentage: .316
  • Walk rate: 16.4%
  • Strikeout rate: 24.1%
  • Isolated power (ISO): .104

Despite a challenging season, Porter’s four Triple-A seasons show a more consistent offensive performance with a .753 OPS. His experience with the Giants will mark his third tenure with the organization, enhancing his familiarity within the team. This added depth at catcher is vital as the Giants aim for a successful 2025 season.
