Rob Manfred Confident Major Leaguers to Join 2028 LA Olympics
Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred expressed strong optimism regarding the participation of major league players in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Unlike the Tokyo Olympics, where MLB restricted players on 40-man rosters from participating, discussions are underway to create an extended All-Star break to facilitate their involvement.
2028 Los Angeles Olympics Participation Plans
The 2028 Olympics are scheduled from July 14 to July 30. Manfred noted that creating a framework for player participation would require agreement from the players’ association, as well as consideration of potential impacts on sponsorship deals. He stated, “I am positive about it. The owners want to make it work, despite logistical challenges.”
At the Tokyo Olympics, the baseball tournament spanned 11 days, concluding with the United States losing to Japan in the gold medal game. For LA 2028, the tournament is anticipated to follow a compressed format, and discussions with the players’ association are ongoing. Participation in the 2028 Olympics is viewed as a unique opportunity, as the subsequent Olympics will occur in Brisbane, Australia, in 2032.
Financial Dynamics and Labor Considerations
Manfred discussed the disparity in payroll among teams, particularly referencing the Los Angeles Dodgers, whose payroll exceeds $509 million. In contrast, the Miami Marlins reported less than $69 million. The topic of a salary cap has been raised due to concerns about payroll imbalances and upcoming labor negotiations, especially with the current contract expiring in 2026.
Ongoing Investigations in MLB
As part of MLB’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of the game, investigations into Cleveland pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz are progressing. Both players are on paid leave as the league examines potential sports betting violations.
Postseason Structure and Expansion Prospects
This season’s postseason includes 12 teams, an increase from 10, which was solidified in the 2022 labor agreement after a proposal for 14 teams was rejected. Manfred expressed satisfaction with the current playoff structure, including the wild-card series format.
Looking ahead, Manfred hopes to finalize two new expansion teams by January 2029, contingent upon the Tampa Bay Rays securing a new stadium. There has been interest from Montreal in re-acquiring an MLB team, potentially to replace the Expos.
Broadcasting Agreements and Future Focus
Current broadcasting contracts are in the legal drafting phase with various networks, including NBCUniversal, Netflix, and ESPN. Manfred noted the complexities involved in finalizing these agreements.
As the league adapts to changing timelines and structures, the potential for major league player participation in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics remains a significant focus for MLB leaders and fans alike.
