Dominican Republic on High Alert Following Hurricane Melissa
The Dominican Republic is currently on high alert as Hurricane Melissa moves away from the island. Despite the storm’s distance, heavy rains continue to pose significant risks, including flooding and landslides.
Hurricane Melissa: A Category 5 Threat
Hurricane Melissa, classified as a Category 5 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale, has already caused seven fatalities across the Caribbean. The casualties include:
- Three in Jamaica
- Three in Haiti
- One in the Dominican Republic
Rescue teams in the Dominican Republic are also searching for a missing teenager. Although the hurricane is moving away from the country, the associated rainfall continues to threaten regions in the southwest, particularly near the border with Haiti.
Weather Warnings and Precautions
The national meteorological service, Indomet, has issued warnings for several provinces. Mechanical winds, thunderstorms, and lightning are expected to occur across various sectors. Due to these hazardous conditions, authorities have advised small and medium-sized vessels to remain in port, especially on the southern coast.
Current Status of Hurricane Melissa
The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Hurricane Melissa was located approximately 185 kilometers away from Kingston, Jamaica, with sustained winds reaching 280 kilometers per hour. The NHC categorized the storm as “extremely dangerous,” predicting devastating winds, sudden flooding, and cyclonic waves in Jamaica.
