Sinner Deems Ending Year as World No. 1 “Impossible”
Jannik Sinner, currently ranked No. 2 in men’s tennis, expressed doubts regarding his chances of reclaiming the world No. 1 position this year. Carlos Alcaraz, who took the top ranking from Sinner in September, remains a significant hurdle to overcome. In a recent press conference, Sinner stated, “It’s impossible. Honestly, I am not thinking about it right now; it will be a goal for next year.”
Sinner’s Tournament Prospects
As Sinner prepares for the Masters 1000 in Paris, he acknowledges the slim chance of surpassing Alcaraz’s ranking. With fewer than 1,000 points separating the two players, there remains a theoretical possibility for Sinner to reclaim the top spot. If he secures victory in the Paris tournament, and Alcaraz exits early, Sinner could close the gap.
Points at Stake
Sinner also faces the challenge of defending 1,500 ATP points from the year-end Finals in Turin, which he won in 2024. In contrast, Alcaraz was eliminated in the group stage during that tournament.
- Sinner’s Achievements: Four-time Grand Slam champion.
- 2024 Titles: Australian Open and Wimbledon.
Current Physical Condition
Despite not having much time to recover from his victory in the ATP 500 Vienna, Sinner feels fit. He faced physical challenges during the final match but remains optimistic about performing in Paris.
Previous performances in Paris
Sinner’s best result at the Masters 1000 in Paris was reaching the Round of 16 in 2023. He remarked, “I have never played well in the Masters 1000 in Paris. This year, I hope to change certain things.”
In the first round, Sinner is set to compete against Zizou Bergs from Belgium, currently ranked No. 41.
