In a startling incident in Jasper County, Mississippi, a truck carrying rhesus monkeys overturned on Interstate 59. The accident occurred at the 117-mile marker, just north of Heidelberg. The vehicle was transporting the monkeys from Tulane University to a testing facility.

According to Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson, there were a total of 21 monkeys involved in the wreck. After the incident, one monkey managed to escape. Authorities reported that five of the loose monkeys have unfortunately been eliminated.

Officials are advising caution regarding the escaped monkeys. The sheriff warned that these animals can carry diseases including hepatitis C, herpes, and COVID-19. Residents are urged not to approach the monkeys and to call 911 immediately if they spot one.
