Colliers Project Leaders Founder and Spouse Set Record with $2.5M Donation to Ottawa Food Bank

Franklin Holtforster, founder and former CEO of Colliers Project Leaders, along with his spouse Birgitte Alting-Mees, made headlines with a generous $2.5 million contribution to the Ottawa Food Bank. This donation is recognized as the most significant in the organization’s four-decade history.

Historic Donation to Ottawa Food Bank

The announcement was made at the Ottawa Food Bank warehouse on a Tuesday. The funds will be disbursed in ten annual installments of $250,000. This financial support aims to assist local agencies addressing food insecurity.

Philosophy of Giving

Holtforster shared insights into his motivation for the donation. He mentioned the influence of his parents, who taught him about the importance of sharing resources. “Their example instilled in me a deep sense of gratitude and responsibility for the abundance I’ve been fortunate to experience,” he expressed.

Alongside his wife, Holtforster emphasized their commitment to ensuring that no one has to choose between basic needs—food, warmth, and shelter. “When you give, you’re not just helping someone today. You are building a future where fewer people face impossible choices,” he noted.

Community Impact and Previous Contributions

  • Holtforster and Alting-Mees have actively supported various charitable institutions over the past 15 years.
  • Their contributions include organizations like the Ottawa Riverkeeper, Ronald McDonald House Ottawa, and the Boys and Girls Club.
  • In a previous act of generosity, they donated $350,000 anonymously last year.
  • This time, they chose to be identified to raise awareness of the Food Bank’s mission.

With food insecurity escalating across Canada, the Ottawa Food Bank highlighted the growing necessity for long-term commitments. Rachael Wilson, CEO of the Ottawa Food Bank, stated the community’s role in their operations. “Ninety-eight percent of our funding comes from the community. We receive no federal government funding, and only two percent of our budget comes from the City of Ottawa,” she noted.

Importance of Sustained Support

Wilson underscored the significance of multi-year donations, stating they allow the Food Bank to tackle the root causes of food insecurity effectively. “Generous multi-year gifts like this one provide sustained support,” she added.

The day of the announcement also featured the unveiling of a new mural wall, designed by Dave Lafreniere from Mural Magic. This artistic addition symbolizes the community’s spirit and support in combating food insecurity.

Holtforster stepped down as CEO of Colliers Project Leaders in 2022, marking a transition but continuing his commitment to philanthropy in Ottawa.
