Doctors Begin Exodus as They Move to Another Province

Over a hundred Quebec doctors are preparing to move to other provinces. Since October 1, 60 physicians have applied for practice permits in Ontario, while 40 have sought the same in New Brunswick.

Surge in Permit Applications

The New Brunswick College of Physicians and Surgeons reports receiving daily requests for practice permits from Quebec doctors. The number of applications in October is ten times higher than in previous months. Aleisha LaMorre, the college spokesperson, commented that only three and four applications were received in August and September, respectively.

LaMorre stated, “New Brunswick offers attractive practice opportunities and lifestyles for Quebec doctors looking to establish themselves elsewhere. We happily welcome their permit requests.”

Ontario’s Permit Requests

Meanwhile, the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario has received 64 applications, 60 of which have come since October 23. From June 1 to October 22, only 19 practice permits were granted.

Quebec Family Physicians Departing

The Federation of General Practitioners of Quebec (FMOQ) confirmed that 25 family doctors recently indicated their intention to leave the public health network. This information was gathered from regional associations of the FMOQ.

  • Number of Quebec doctors moving: 100+
  • Practice permits requested in Ontario: 60
  • Practice permits requested in New Brunswick: 40
  • Increase in New Brunswick applications: 10 times
  • Applications in August and September: 3 and 4
  • Practice permits granted in Ontario (June 1 – October 22): 19

FMOQ spokesperson Stéphane Gosselin expressed concern over the situation, stating, “There is a looming hemorrhage.” However, it remains unclear whether these physicians are retiring or relocating to other jurisdictions.
