Lucid’s $50K EVs to Feature Level 4 Autonomous Driving
Lucid Motors is moving towards offering the first Level 4 autonomous electric vehicles (EVs) with the help of NVIDIA technology. This partnership aims to create vehicles that operate with a “mind-off” driving capability.
Lucid’s Evolution in Autonomous Driving
Since introducing its advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), DreamDrive Pro, in the Lucid Air in 2021, the company has made significant strides. Over recent years, the system has been enhanced with features like hands-free driving and automated lane changes. A software update released in June added these new capabilities, showcasing Lucid’s commitment to advancing its technology.
Collaboration with NVIDIA
Lucid’s latest collaboration with NVIDIA is crucial for delivering Level 4 autonomous capabilities. The company plans to integrate NVIDIA’s DRIVE AV technology into its forthcoming midsize EV lineup. This includes utilizing two NVIDIA DRIVE AGX THOR computers along with NVIDIA DriveOS.
Planned Vehicle Features
- The midsize lineup will centralize all automated driving functions.
- The Gravity SUV will begin with Level 2++ capabilities, featuring eyes-on, point-to-point driving.
- Aim to achieve a true “eyes-off” driving experience in future models.
Release Timeline and Pricing
Lucid plans to produce its midsize EVs starting next year. The company aims to keep prices competitive, with estimates around $50,000 for the entry-level models.
Upcoming Vehicle Models
Lucid is expected to launch three midsize electric vehicles. The lineup will include:
- A crossover SUV
- A rugged variant of the SUV
- A midsize sedan designed to compete with the Tesla Model 3
The first glimpse of the crossover was shared last September and indicated a design similar to the Tesla Model 3.
Commitment to Manufacturing Efficiency
The partnership with NVIDIA is viewed as a pivotal step in Lucid’s strategy to enhance manufacturing. The integration of NVIDIA’s Industrial platform and Omniverse aims to reduce costs and improve production efficiency, ensuring quicker delivery of the new vehicles.
