Petrol and Diesel Prices Surge Again as Electricity Rate Increases Drive Up EV Charging Costs

The recent increases in petrol and diesel prices are causing concern among families as they prepare for winter. A new survey from AA Ireland highlights that rising electricity rates and EV charging tariffs are compounding the financial strain. The survey indicates that consumers will face higher costs for both fuel and electricity this month.

Fuel Price Increases

This month, petrol prices have risen by 2 cents, bringing the average cost to €1.72 per litre. Meanwhile, diesel prices increased by 1 cent, now averaging €1.68 per litre. These adjustments follow a recent carbon tax hike, implemented at the start of the month, which added an additional 2 to 3 cents per litre for both fuels.

Electricity Cost Impact

Electricity prices have also surged, affecting the cost of home charging for electric vehicles (EVs). Major energy suppliers, including Bord Gáis Energy, Energia, Pinergy, and SSE Airtricity, have announced increases in their rates, contributing to the mounting pressure on household budgets. Flogas had previously increased its electricity prices in August.

Challenges for EV Owners

There are nearly 100,000 electric vehicles currently registered in the state. As pump prices remain stable, the costs associated with home energy for EV owners are on the rise. According to an AA Ireland spokesperson, while the diesel price increase is manageable, the significant concern lies with the climbing household energy expenses.

Recommendations for Consumers

AA Ireland encourages electric vehicle owners to review their energy plans, particularly those that offer off-peak or overnight charging rates. Such tariffs can help mitigate the impact of rising costs during the winter months.

  • Petrol price: €1.72 per litre (up 2 cents)
  • Diesel price: €1.68 per litre (up 1 cent)
  • Electricity price increases from major suppliers
  • Approximately 100,000 registered EVs in the state

Future Price Outlook

As the government mandates refiners to increase the biofuel content in motor fuels, further price rises for petrol and diesel are expected in January. This anticipated increase adds to the ongoing financial pressures faced by consumers amidst higher living costs and increasing electricity rates.
