FG mandates public officials to fly Nigerian airlines for international travel

The Nigerian government is taking steps to enhance the aviation sector with the proposed ‘Fly Nigerian Act.’ This legislation aims to mandate government officials to use Nigerian airlines for international travel.

Key Details of the Proposed Legislation

Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, announced the proposal during the inaugural direct flight ceremony of Air Peace from Abuja to London Heathrow. The event included notable figures such as Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace.

Core Provisions of the ‘Fly Nigerian Act’

The proposed ‘Fly Nigerian Act’ outlines specific requirements for government officials traveling abroad:

  • Government officials must choose Nigerian airlines for international routes when available.
  • If no local airline operates on a specific route, exceptions will apply.

Keyamo emphasized that the goal of this legislation is to align Nigeria with global practices observed in countries like the United States and India, which have similar laws supporting their national carriers.

Legislative Intent and Implications

The minister expressed confidence in the passage of the bill, stating, “We are going to bring the bill on the Fly Nigerian Air to him (Benjamin Kalu). He will pass it.” He believes that the legislation will significantly benefit Nigeria’s aviation industry while increasing domestic airlines’ viability.

Keyamo pointed out that adherence to these regulations would foster growth in the sector and bolster public confidence in local airlines, ultimately enhancing the nation’s transportation infrastructure.
