Met Éireann Alerts: Brace for Impact as Hurricane Melissa Nears with Multiple Weather Warnings

Ireland is preparing for significant weather developments as Hurricane Melissa approaches. Met Éireann has issued multiple weather warnings, indicating potential impacts across the country.

Hurricane Melissa Weather Warnings

Met Éireann has categorized the warnings as status yellow, focusing on the following counties:

  • Cork and Kerry: Rain warning issued from 11 AM to 8 PM on Thursday, predicting heavy rainfall.
  • Galway and Mayo: Similar rain warning from 12 PM to 8 PM, with expectations of local flooding and challenging travel conditions.
  • Waterford and Wexford: Also included in a yellow wind warning from 11 AM to 11 PM.

Residents can anticipate very strong southerly winds with possible gales along coastal areas. Met Éireann cautioned about the risk of fallen trees and large waves.

Warnings from the UK Met Office

Additionally, the UK Met Office has issued a wind warning for all of Northern Ireland on Thursday. This alert is valid from 1 PM to 11 PM, with forecasts of strong winds and heavy rain.

Unsettled Weather Ahead

As the Halloween weekend approaches, Ireland is expected to experience unsettled weather conditions. Low pressure will linger to the northwest, bringing breezy conditions on Friday.

Morning rain is likely, although the early evening of Halloween may be mostly dry. However, rain is projected to arrive from the south later in the evening. Following this, heavy rain will sweep across the country overnight, with possible hail and lightning as temperatures could drop to around 4°C.

Weekend Forecast

Saturday’s weather will be chilly, with a maximum temperature of 12°C. Expect a mix of sunny spells and scattered showers throughout the day.

Impact of Hurricane Melissa

According to Donal Egan from Met Éireann, the remnants of Hurricane Melissa are not expected to affect Ireland before Monday. He remarked, “Current model runs suggest the remnants of Melissa will track towards Iceland, significantly weakening and transitioning into an extra-tropical cyclone.”

As it moves, there is potential for it to bring warmer and moister air to Ireland, possibly resulting in wet weather on Monday.
