Bishop Winans Responds to Viral Video Involving Church Member at Donation Event

A recent viral video has led to a significant misunderstanding regarding a donation event at Perfecting Church in Detroit. The incident involved Bishop Marvin Winans and church member Roberta McCoy, both of whom have publicly clarified the situation.

Bishop Winans Hosts Fundraising Event

On a recent Sunday, Perfecting Church held a fundraising event called “Day of Giving.” During this event, Bishop Winans encouraged members to donate $1,000 each. The goal was to raise additional funds for the construction of a new church sanctuary and to support various community initiatives.

To streamline the donation process, Winans requested that those pledging $2,000 or more come to the front first. Other members were then invited to donate in descending order, with contributions starting at just $1.62. This structured method was designed to maintain order amidst a large turnout.

Viral Video and Misunderstanding

The situation took a turn when McCoy, a dedicated church member since 2013, was captured on video approaching the front with a donation below $2,000. This footage led many to believe that Bishop Winans rebuked her, sparking negative reactions online.

In response to these claims, McCoy clarified, “He absolutely did not rebuke me. There was a correction based on his instructions on how to line up.” She expressed concern over the backlash she experienced after the video went viral.

Bishop Winans Addresses the Incident

Following the misunderstanding, Bishop Winans addressed the incident to further explain his actions. He stated that his intention was to prevent elderly church members from standing for extended periods. “I was calling because the whole church was giving… and we didn’t want people standing,” he explained. Winans emphasized that his instructions were meant for organizational purposes only.

After the incident, McCoy reported receiving a personal apology from Winans. She reiterated her steadfast support for the church and highlighted her consistent contributions over the years.

Ongoing Commitment to Community Support

The public clarifications by both Bishop Winans and Roberta McCoy aim to mitigate the misunderstandings caused by the viral video. Perfecting Church remains focused on its mission of community support and engagement, continuing to foster a spirit of giving among its congregation.
