Autism Overcome: From Speech Struggles to MBA Grad and NYC Marathon Runner

At just 23 years old, Evan Mansfield is achieving remarkable milestones that defy the odds. Diagnosed with autism at two, the Irish native is now completing his MBA at Fairfield University in Connecticut. He is also gearing up to run in the TCS New York City Marathon for the first time.

Mansfield’s journey began in rural southeast Ireland, where he faced developmental challenges that set him apart at an early age. He struggled significantly with feeding, social interaction, and communication. Support from his family and specialized education played vital roles in his development.

Mansfield received intensive support throughout his childhood, including speech therapy and one-on-one teaching. “It’s taken a lot of hard work,” he noted, attributing his progress to early access to crucial resources.

Running for Awareness

As a member of the New York Road Runners’ Team Inspire, Mansfield aims to raise awareness about autism during the marathon. He is actively fundraising for the Autistic Self Advocacy Network, a nonprofit that emphasizes the importance of autistic voices in discussions about autism.

Dispelling Myths

Mansfield emphasizes that autism is not a disease but rather a difference in processing information. “I just want to put out there that autism isn’t a problem that needs to be solved,” he stated. His goal is to counter misconceptions and foster understanding.

Aiming for the Finish Line

Mansfield ran his first half-marathon last year and is now participating in the iconic 26.2-mile New York City Marathon. He intends to finish in under four hours, marking a significant achievement in his running career.

“It couldn’t have been a better way to top off my education,” Mansfield expressed, looking forward to graduation in December. He aspires to work as an analyst or product manager post-graduation.
