UK Households Could See £6 Increase in Energy Bills Due to Ofgem Debt Relief Scheme

The UK’s energy landscape is set to face a significant change as households may see a £6 increase in energy bills. This adjustment arises from Ofgem’s new debt relief scheme aimed at managing the rising energy debt crisis.

Details of the Ofgem Debt Relief Scheme

Ofgem’s plan, confirmed by Charlotte Friel, Director for Retail Pricing at Ofgem, is intended to alleviate energy debts accrued during the recent price spikes. The scheme is scheduled to launch early next year.

  • The scheme aims to assist approximately 195,000 customers
  • It may eventually expand, costing up to £1 billion
  • If implemented in full, it could clear debts for about 2.3 million customers

Impact on Energy Bills

As per the scheme’s outline, households will see an increase of 50p a month, translating to £6 annually, to help fund this initiative. This is a necessary step to address the staggering energy debt that currently amounts to £4.4 billion in the UK.

Current Debt Situation

Without intervention, the burden of energy debts will only grow. Presently, the costs related to repaying others’ debts are adding a typical £52 annually to household bills. The energy crisis, exacerbated by global events, has led to an estimated £1.9 billion in arrears.

Eligibility for the Debt Write-off

To qualify for this initial phase of the debt relief scheme, customers must meet specific criteria:

  • Have accumulated over £100 in energy debt
  • Debts must have occurred between April 2022 and March 2024

These customers will be identified automatically and contacted by their energy suppliers. The goal is to provide timely assistance to households reliant on means-tested benefits.

This debt relief initiative is just the first phase of a larger strategy to combat energy debt in the UK. Through proactive measures, Ofgem aims to restore financial stability to affected households.
