Bizarre Discoveries: Pork Chop and Toy Doll Uncovered in Anglian Water Sewer as Residents Advised to Bin It

Anglian Water has launched an awareness initiative aimed at minimizing sewer blockages caused by improper waste disposal. The campaign, titled “Just Bin It,” underscores the importance of what residents flush or pour down their drains.

Bizarre Discoveries in Anglian Water Sewers

Among the unusual items recently uncovered in Anglian Water’s sewer system are a pork chop, sweets, and a toy doll. These discoveries highlight the pressing issue related to sewer blockages.

Impact of Unflushable Items

Anglian Water reports that around 80% of sewer floods in the region are due to blockages linked to unflushable items. Last year, the company addressed over 35,000 such blockages, substantially contributing to waste and pollution issues. A significant portion of these blockages is caused by personal wipes, with approximately 9,500 packets being flushed daily into the East of England’s sewers.

Community Engagement and Unblocktober

Throughout October, Anglian Water participates in the annual Unblocktober campaign. This initiative aims to enhance public understanding of proper waste disposal practices, thus protecting the drains, sewers, and waterways.

  • 80% of sewer flooding incidents are caused by blockages.
  • Over 35,000 blockages were cleared last year.
  • Approximately 9,500 packets of wipes are flushed daily.

Innovative Solutions for Sewer Safety

In their efforts to combat this issue, Anglian Water has introduced specialized devices, known as “hedgehogs,” into the sewer systems. These devices effectively trap wipes and other materials that should not be flushed. Since their deployment in August, they have collected over 18,000 unflushable items within just eight weeks.

Call to Action

Connor Brailsford, the Programme Manager at Anglian Water, emphasizes the need for community cooperation. He urges both businesses and residents to pause and consider their waste disposal habits. “If it’s not pee, poo, or toilet paper, it belongs in the bin,” he states, stressing the collective responsibility in preserving the environment.

Through educational initiatives and good disposal practices, Anglian Water aims to safeguard local communities from sewer blockages and the associated environmental impacts.
