Heavy Rain and Winds Disrupt Transit, Cause Damage in NYC and NJ

On Thursday, severe weather conditions marked by heavy rain and strong winds caused significant disruptions in New York City and New Jersey. The storm led to numerous power outages, fallen trees, and impacted transit systems across the Tri-State area.
Impact on Airports and Transit Services
Air traffic faced interruptions as Newark Liberty International, JFK, and LaGuardia airports imposed ground stops due to high winds. New Jersey Transit experienced temporary suspensions on its North Jersey Coast Line service after a tree fell on power wires in Woodbridge.
Although service has resumed between Penn Station New York and Long Branch stations, delays of up to 20 minutes remain possible. To accommodate passengers, NJ Transit is cross-honoring rail tickets with private carrier buses and PATH services at Newark Penn Station and 33rd Street, New York City.
Restrictions on MTA Crossings
The MTA announced restrictions on certain vehicle types across its bridges and tunnels due to ongoing high winds. The current prohibitions include:
- Cross Bay Bridge: Ban on empty tractor trailers and tandem trucks; shared use path closed.
- Marine Parkway Bridge: Ban on empty tractor trailers and tandem trucks; shared use path closed.
- Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge: Ban on all tractor trailers, tandem trucks, cars towing trailers, and motorcycles.
- Throgs Neck Bridge: Ban on empty tractor trailers and tandem trucks.
Local Damage Reports
In Yonkers, a tree collided with a closed porch on Rockland Avenue, causing substantial damage. Live utility wires were down in Rockaway Beach along Beach 86th Street. Additionally, fallen trees obstructed roads in the Queens neighborhoods of Corona and Flushing, contributing to hazardous conditions.
The situation remains fluid as weather conditions evolve throughout the evening. Residents are advised to exercise caution and stay updated on transit and weather alerts.
