Waymo Accident Claims Beloved Store Cat in San Francisco’s Mission District

Residents of San Francisco’s Mission District are grieving the loss of a beloved community cat, KitKat. This friendly feline, known as the store cat at Randa’s Market, was tragically killed by a Waymo vehicle late Monday night. Now, locals have created a memorial that has become a gathering place for those mourning his loss.
Community Reaction to KitKat’s Death
KitKat was more than just a pet; he was a significant presence in the neighborhood. Many, including local resident Margarita Lawa, expressed their affection for him. “It was everybody’s cat,” she stated. KitKat interacted with customers daily, earning the nickname “the Mayor of 16th Street.”
Creating a Memorial
In response to his passing, neighbors have come together to curate a memorial outside Randa’s Market. Flowers, candles, and personalized messages have been continually added to honor KitKat’s memory. Local resident Lara described her role in setting up the memorial. “This was built by the community,” she emphasized, pointing out that it reflects their collective love for the cat.

Outpouring of Love
Mike Zeidan, the owner of Randa’s Market, expressed his gratitude for the community’s support. “It’s really touching,” he noted, reflecting on the unexpected response to KitKat’s death. Many community members shared their memories of visiting the cat over the nearly ten years he spent at the market, highlighting his role in brightening their days.
The loss of KitKat has left a profound void in the neighborhood. Lara concluded, “There’s nothing like this,” acknowledging the unique bond the cat had with residents. This shared space for remembrance provides some closure as the community comes to terms with their loss.
