Harrison Ford Honored for Environmental Advocacy at Field Museum Ceremony

Harrison Ford recently received the inaugural Transformative Conservation Leadership Award at a ceremony held at the Field Museum. This event, part of the E.O. Wilson Foundation’s annual Half-Earth Day celebration, honored Ford for his long-standing commitment to environmental advocacy.
Harrison Ford’s Environmental Advocacy
The acclaimed actor, known for iconic roles like Han Solo and Indiana Jones, spoke about his childhood experiences in Chicago. Ford shared a poignant memory of encountering a red fox, which deepened his connection to nature. “I knew that I was a part of nature,” he expressed.
He has advocated for the environment since the 1990s, emphasizing climate change awareness. In his speech, Ford called for a new, apolitical approach focused on preserving nature and addressing climate change. He also serves as vice chair for Conservation International, an organization committed to protecting biodiversity.
The E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation
The award, presented by Paula J. Ehrlich, CEO of the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation, commemorates the legacy of E.O. Wilson, a renowned biologist who passed away in 2021. Wilson had a significant influence on Ford’s environmental efforts, even naming a new ant species, Pheidole harrisonfordi, after the actor in 2002.
Half-Earth Day and Conservation Leadership
The Half-Earth Day event included panel discussions on conservation and environmental leadership. The “Half-Earth” principle, articulated in Wilson’s 2016 book, advocates for protecting half of the planet’s land and seas for conservation purposes.
In addition to Ford, the ceremony recognized David Willard with the Parker/Gentry Award for his significant contributions to bird conservation. Willard, a long-time researcher at the Field Museum, has worked tirelessly to document bird biodiversity and advocate for reducing bird strikes in urban environments.
Conclusion
The event underscored the importance of collaboration in the fight against climate change. “We could relax,” Ford said, envisioning a future where humans live harmoniously with nature. The commitment showcased by Ford and others at the event exemplifies the ongoing efforts needed to address environmental challenges.
