Gov. Whitmer: Michigan Secures Historic Largest Economic Project
Michigan has secured what Governor Gretchen Whitmer describes as the largest economic project in the state’s history. The project, named OpenAI Stargate, will be developed in Saline Township and is a collaboration between OpenAI, Oracle, and Related Digital.

This multi-billion dollar initiative aims to build one of the most advanced AI infrastructure facilities in the United States. It is projected to generate over 2,500 union construction jobs, 450 on-site jobs, and 1,500 additional jobs throughout Washtenaw County.

Innovative Sustainability Practices
OpenAI Stargate will implement a one gigawatt facility without requiring extra power generation. Officials have confirmed that the project will utilize a closed-loop water system, ensuring no additional water is sourced from the Great Lakes. Additionally, over 700 acres will be preserved as farmland, wetland, and forest.
Community Investments
Related Digital plans to invest an extra $14 million in local initiatives, including:
- Support for local fire departments.
- A community investment fund.
- A farmland preservation trust.
Minimal Traffic Impact
The Michigan Department of Transportation assessed the project and gave it an ‘A’ for anticipated minimal traffic disruption. Governor Whitmer stated that this investment sends a clear signal that Michigan is committed to building the future.
Legislative Support
Michigan’s selection as the site for OpenAI Stargate is attributed to its strong workforce and favorable bipartisan legislation. In January, Governor Whitmer signed House Bill 4906, which included amendments to the Use Tax Act and General Sales Tax Act.
