Meta’s AI Investment Drops Zuckerberg Two Spots on Billionaires Index

Mark Zuckerberg’s fortune took a significant hit recently, resulting in his fall from third to fifth on Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. This decline followed Meta’s quarterly earnings report, which led to a substantial drop in its stock price.
Key Financial Changes
Zuckerberg’s net worth decreased by approximately $29.2 billion, leaving him with a total of $235 billion. His new position on the Billionaires Index places him behind Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Alphabet’s Larry Page. As of now, Page’s wealth has risen to $244 billion, after Alphabet’s shares gained 2.5% due to strong earnings from Google Cloud and Search.
Stock Performance and Investor Concerns
- Zuckerberg’s Fall: Dropped from third to fifth on the Billionaires Index.
- Net Worth: Decreased to $235 billion, a loss of $29.2 billion.
- Alphabet Gains: Larry Page’s wealth increased to $244 billion.
- Amazon’s Growth: Jeff Bezos’s fortune dropped by $6.6 billion.
On the other hand, Amazon’s stock surged over 13% following robust third-quarter growth, particularly in its cloud services segment. Investors have historically reacted negatively to Meta’s earnings reports, as demonstrated by a 24% plummet in 2022 after the company missed targets.
Meta’s AI Investments
Meta’s management indicated that future capital expenditures on artificial intelligence (AI) could range between $70 billion and $72 billion by 2025, an increase from previous estimates of $66 billion to $72 billion. Chief Financial Officer Susan Li mentioned that spending would likely escalate in 2026 as the company invests further in data centers, cloud services, and AI talent.
Analyst Reactions
During a conference call with analysts, Zuckerberg defended Meta’s substantial investments in AI technology despite rising costs. JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth raised concerns over these expenditures, but Zuckerberg emphasized the necessity of these investments for impending AI advancements. He explained that even in a worst-case scenario, the pre-built capacity would better position Meta for future opportunities.
Market Implications
Following the earnings report, Meta’s stock experienced a near 9% drop, and by Thursday evening, the decline reached over 11%. Microsoft also reported notable capital expenditures, increasing from $24.2 billion the previous quarter to a record $34.9 billion. However, Microsoft’s shares fell by 3% on the same day.
Future Predictions
Peter Berezin, chief market strategist at BCA Research, characterized the declines in both Meta and Microsoft as cautionary signals for the AI investment landscape. He expressed concern that increased capital spending announcements from tech firms could lead to stock price declines, suggesting a possible warning for the AI market. He stated that if firms operate under the assumption of best-case scenarios, they could face significant financial repercussions if those expectations are not met.
