The SECU Foundation has allocated $500,000 to Safelight, Inc. for the expansion of its domestic violence shelter in Henderson County, North Carolina. This significant funding will enhance the organization’s capacity to offer vital support services to survivors of domestic violence.

Expansion of Safelight’s Domestic Violence Shelter

The grant will enable Safelight to increase its shelter capacity, allowing an additional 150 individuals to receive assistance each year. This expansion aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for victims transitioning to recovery and sustainable living.

Services Offered by Safelight

Since its founding in 1984, Safelight has implemented comprehensive programs to support survivors of violence. The organization offers various essential services, including:

  • Medical assistance
  • Legal aid
  • Housing support
  • Employment training

To date, Safelight has assisted over 46,000 individuals in their journey toward healing and establishing violence-free lives.

Community Impact and Leadership Support

Chris Ayers, Chair of the SECU Foundation Board, highlighted the vital role that Safelight plays within the community. He remarked that the services provided align with the foundation’s “People Helping People®” philosophy. Safelight’s CEO, Lauren Wilkie, expressed her appreciation for the grant, noting that it will facilitate an expansion from 13 to 20 rooms in the shelter, thereby increasing support for those escaping domestic violence.
