Texas Rangers Pitching Coach Mike Maddux Leaves Organization

Mike Maddux, the esteemed pitching coach, is leaving the Texas Rangers organization after three successful years. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in guiding the team to their historic first World Series title in 2023. His impact on the pitching staff was notable, as the Rangers achieved the best rotation ERA in baseball in 2025 at 3.41.
Transition to Los Angeles Angels
As per sources familiar with the situation, Maddux is expected to take a similar role with the Los Angeles Angels. The Rangers did not dismiss him but offered him the opportunity to return under new manager Skip Schumaker. The organization also discussed various other potential positions within the team.
Recognition from the Rangers
Chris Young, the President of Baseball Operations, expressed gratitude to Maddux. “The Texas Rangers are forever grateful to Mike for his contributions,” he stated. He emphasized Maddux’s significant role in some of the best seasons in Rangers history, particularly during the 2023 championship season.
Maddux’s Coaching Journey
This marks Maddux’s second departure from the Rangers. He previously served from 2009 to 2015 under managers Ron Washington and Jeff Banister before joining the Washington Nationals. After returning to the Rangers to work with Bruce Bochy, he helped the team achieve a commendable 3.90 ERA from the starting rotation over three seasons, ranking fifth in Major League Baseball.
Impact of Coaching Decisions
Maddux’s exit, occurring just four weeks after Schumaker’s managerial appointment, presents challenges for the Rangers. They had a brief exclusive window to formulate their coaching staff amidst a competitive hiring environment.
- The Rangers are considering Jordan Tiegs, who showed promise in the minor leagues and contributed to bullpen development in 2025.
- Another potential candidate is Mel Stottlemyre Jr., who previously worked with Schumaker in Miami.
The Rangers now face the task of filling the pitching coach position at a critical time as they seek to maintain their competitive edge in the league.
