Patriots Set to Unleash Explosive Rookie Running Back Sunday
As the New England Patriots prepare for their matchup against the Atlanta Falcons, the team’s running back situation is under scrutiny. Rhamondre Stevenson, the leading rusher for the Patriots, is facing uncertainty due to a toe injury that has sidelined him for two consecutive practices.
Key Player Updates
Stevenson, 27, has accumulated 279 rushing yards and recorded three touchdowns this season. In addition to his rushing contributions, he has also caught 16 passes for 169 yards. Last week, he had a modest performance, rushing for 34 yards on 14 attempts while adding a 15-yard reception from quarterback Drake Maye.
With Stevenson’s status in doubt for Sunday’s game, rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson may take the lead. Henderson, a second-round draft pick, showcased his talent last week, rushing for 75 yards on only 10 carries. Patriots’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels expressed optimism about Henderson’s potential, stating, “I don’t think it’s a secret that he’s fast. He has the ability to make impactful plays.”
Running Back Depth Concerns
The Patriots’ backfield depth has already been tested this season, particularly after the unfortunate season-ending injury to Antonio Gibson. If Stevenson is unable to play, Terrell Jennings, who was signed off the practice squad, will likely step in. Jennings, 24, has been elevated to the game-day roster multiple times this season and has rushed for 33 yards on seven attempts.
In response to their depth concerns, the Patriots recently signed three additional running backs to their practice squad: D’Ernest Johnson, Rushawn Baker, and Johnathan Ward. Johnson comes with significant experience, having played 96 NFL games across three different teams.
Coaching Confidence
McDaniels remains confident in the team’s ability to adapt, stating, “I think we have all the answers we need.” He emphasized the importance of optimizing the skills of the players currently on the roster, especially as they prepare for the upcoming game against the Falcons.
The Patriots will finalize their roster decisions following their final practice on Friday, making critical assessments of their running back options ahead of Sunday’s potential clash.
