Larson Targets Second Cup Series Title Competing Against Stewart and Gordon
Kyle Larson is set to compete for his second NASCAR Cup Series title at Phoenix Raceway this Sunday. The pressure is on as he aims to follow in the footsteps of two racing legends, Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon. Larson expressed his admiration for both champions, highlighting them as key figures in his racing aspirations.
Larson’s Championship Goals
Larson articulated his goals during the Championship 4 media day, stating, “Winning a second would get me closer” to both Stewart and Gordon. Stewart, a three-time champion, won his titles in 2002, 2005, and 2011. Gordon achieved four championships in 1995, 1997, 1998, and 2001. Both drivers are now honored members of the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Larson drives for Hendrick Motorsports, the same team where Gordon serves as vice chairman. As the sole championship contender with a prior title, Larson captured his first in 2021.
Phoenix Raceway’s Significance
This year marks the sixth time Phoenix Raceway will host the championship race. Larson’s experience at this relatively flat one-mile oval has been beneficial, as it aligns with the strengths he showcased during his title-winning season.
Optimism Surrounding Team Performance
Despite the historical significance, concerns linger about the competitiveness of Hendrick Motorsports’ flat-track package. Larson, however, is optimistic about their chances. He remarked, “This is probably the best I’ve felt about what we’re bringing for the Championship 4 compared to any other year.” Recent performances at similar tracks like Gateway and New Hampshire have bolstered his confidence.
- Leading 52 laps at St. Louis, Larson finished 12th.
- He finished 7th after leading four laps at New Hampshire.
A crucial tire test at Gateway during the summer was pivotal for Larson’s team, contributing to their turnaround in performance. This test allowed them to refine their setups, leading to improved outcomes in subsequent races.
Final Thoughts Ahead of the Championship Race
As the championship race approaches, Larson is eager for the opportunity to prove the effectiveness of their new setup. “I feel like we’ll have a better opportunity to win a championship than we’ve ever had in the Next Gen era,” he conveyed. His anticipation reflects both excitement and commitment, setting the stage for what could be a defining moment in his racing career.
