Dems Rally with Mamdani; Cuomo Warns of Party ‘Civil War’

With only three days left for early voting and less than a week until the election, significant developments are unfolding in New York City’s mayoral race. Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani is gaining considerable support, while his competitor, Andrew Cuomo, warns of a growing divide within the Democratic Party.

Democratic Unity Behind Mamdani

At a recent gala hosted by the Brooklyn Democratic Party in Red Hook, prominent Democrats rallied behind Mamdani. Notable figures, including Attorney General Letitia James, expressed their enthusiasm for Mamdani’s candidacy. James stated, “In a few days, we’re going to make history and elect the first Muslim mayor of this city.”

Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, a key leader in Brooklyn’s Democratic Party, emphasized the party’s unity. “Brooklyn is speaking in one voice,” she said, underscoring Mamdani’s ability to resonate with diverse party members.

Polling Data Favors Mamdani

As the election date approaches, recent polls suggest a significant lead for Mamdani over Cuomo. A few key statistics include:

  • An Emerson/PIX 11 poll shows Mamdani ahead by 25 points, 50% to 25%.
  • A Marist poll reveals a 16-point advantage for Mamdani at 48% to Cuomo’s 32%.
  • A Quinnipiac poll indicates a smaller margin, with Mamdani at 42% and Cuomo at 33%.

Despite these figures, Mamdani remains focused on grassroots efforts. While canvassing in Clinton Hill, he advised supporters to remain engaged, stating, “Winning this race itself is a mandate to deliver for New Yorkers.”

Cuomo’s Concerns Over Party Division

Cuomo, now an independent candidate after losing the primary, has articulated concerns about a fracture within the Democratic Party. He described a “quiet civil war” being waged, characterizing Mamdani and others as part of a radical left movement. He expressed concern that extreme left ideologies could undermine the party’s foundation.

Challenges for Republican Nominee

Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa is also facing challenges in this election. He criticized the polls, suggesting they may not reflect actual voter turnout. Sliwa is contending with substantial endorsement support for Cuomo, including former Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s involvement.

In an effort to attract moderate Democrats, Sliwa has received an endorsement from City Councilmember Bob Holden, a moderate figure within the party. He suggests that voters hesitant to support a Republican candidate might consider his campaign as an alternative.

Controversies and Islamophobia Allegations

During a press conference, Cuomo again addressed allegations of Islamophobia in his campaign. He claimed that Mamdani’s candidacy was promoting divisiveness and toxic behavior. This statement comes amidst tensions within the Muslim community, as some leaders openly supported Mamdani.

Sheikh Ibrahim Niass, a prominent figure at a Bronx mosque, endorsed Cuomo, yet he faced backlash for diverging views among other community members. Zahra Thiam, a liaison for the mosque, clarified that endorsements reflect individual opinions, not the consensus of its congregants.

As the election nears, the intensity of the campaigning continues, setting the stage for a pivotal moment in New York City’s political landscape.
