In a significant crackdown on organized crime, Colombian authorities have arrested two alleged leaders of the notorious “Salsa Nueva Generación” gang. Manuel Arrieta Cedeño, known as “Chucho,” and Johnnier Yesmith Marrugo, referred to as “Chino Mafia,” were apprehended in Cartagena, Bolívar. Both individuals are implicated in a series of violent crimes, including ten murders and eight attempted murders that occurred between 2023 and 2024.
Details of the Arrests
The arrests were made by the Fiscalía and the Police, who conducted an extensive investigation into the gang’s activities. The criminals are believed to be responsible for a range of targeted killings in Cartagena, which are tied to violent disputes over drug trafficking control in the area.
Crimes Attributed to the Gang
- Participation in at least 10 confirmed murders
- Involvement in eight attempted homicides
- At least two assassination attempts in January 2024, resulting in the deaths of a minor and a lawyer
- Five individuals injured during a violent incident on February 18, 2024, in the Chapacua neighborhood
Authorities suggested these violent acts were employed as intimidation tactics against the local population. They revealed that Marrugo allegedly led the criminal organization, issuing orders for various murders, while Cedeño managed the local drug trafficking operations.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
A specialized prosecutor from Bolívar has charged both suspects with serious offenses, including:
- Conspiracy to commit a crime
- Murder and attempted murder
- Drug trafficking, manufacturing, or possession
- Illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and related components
- Illegal use of movable and immovable property
Both suspects have denied the charges and are currently awaiting trial in a correctional facility. The investigations continue as authorities aim to dismantle the workings of the “Salsa Nueva Generación” criminal structure.
