Auckland Council Shuts Down Access to 14 Maunga for Guy Fawkes Safety Measures
Auckland Council has announced the closure of access to 14 volcanic cones, known as maunga, during the Guy Fawkes festivities. This decision aims to protect these iconic sites from fire hazards associated with fireworks.

To enhance safety, the Tūpuna Maunga Authority will place security personnel at key entrances. The following maunga will be affected:

Guidance for Residents
Julie Pickering, Acting General Manager of Parks and Community Facilities, stresses the importance of safety during celebrations. She encourages residents to respect noise levels and consider their neighbors, especially those with pets who may be disturbed by fireworks.
Pet Safety Advisory
Elly Waitoa, Animal Management Manager, advises pet owners to ensure their animals are secure during the festivities. An increase in pets entering shelters is common during this time. Registering and microchipping pets will aid in their return should they stray.
Vehicle access to Te Oneone Rangatira / Muriwai Beach will also be restricted from November 2, 2025, at 5:00 AM until 8:00 AM on November 10, 2025. This temporary closure serves to further mitigate fire risks in the area.
Auckland Council is committed to ensuring a safe Guy Fawkes period for residents and the environment. As such, they continue to remind the public of the regulations surrounding the sale and use of fireworks.
