WKU Football Welcomes NMSU for Homecoming Showdown
WKU Football is gearing up for a highly anticipated homecoming matchup against New Mexico State on November 1 at Houchens-Smith Stadium. The Hilltoppers are coming off a thrilling overtime victory over Louisiana Tech, winning 28-27. This win marks a significant momentum shift for the team.
Quarterback Situation
Redshirt freshman Rodney Tisdale Jr. will make his second consecutive start. After stepping in for the injured Maverick McIvor, Tisdale threw for 227 yards, including one touchdown, though he did face one interception.
Head Coach Tyson Helton expressed satisfaction with Tisdale’s performance, stating, “I thought he brought a spark. He handled the offense pretty well, although he is still young and learning.”
Challenges Ahead
WKU’s defensive unit faced challenges against Louisiana Tech, allowing 340 passing yards from quarterback Blake Baker. Improving their pass defense will be critical against New Mexico State.
New Mexico State Outlook
The Aggies come into this game after a tough overtime loss to Missouri State. Junior wide receiver Donovan Faupel was a standout, catching 10 passes for 84 yards and one touchdown. However, senior quarterback Logan Fife had difficulties, accumulating only 207 yards with one touchdown and four interceptions.
Conference Standings
The Hilltoppers are currently positioned third in Conference USA, boasting a 4-1 record. They trail behind Kennesaw State and Jacksonville State, both of which hold undefeated records at 4-0.
“We are still in this conference hunt, so there’s a lot to play for,” Helton remarked. “I’m just excited to be back home and play in front of our home crowd.”
Historical Matchup
- Last season, WKU defeated New Mexico State 41-28 at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
- In the previous year, the Aggies won 38-29 during WKU’s homecoming.
The kickoff for this year’s homecoming game against NMSU is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT. The Hilltoppers aim to leverage their recent success as they face the Aggies at home, hoping for another win to maintain their standing in the conference.
