Disney Launches First Storyliving Community in Coachella Valley

The Walt Disney Company is venturing into a new realm of real estate with the launch of Cotino, its inaugural Storyliving community located in the Coachella Valley. Unlike the whimsical theme parks, Cotino offers a sophisticated residential experience inspired by the Disney lifestyle, appealing mainly to baby boomers and Generation X. This strategic move comes as part of a growing trend toward lifestyle communities, as noted by Claire Bilby, senior vice president of Storyliving by Disney.

Cotino: A Unique Disney Community

Cotino is situated in Rancho Mirage, an area significant to Walt Disney as it was one of his retreats. The community’s design is a collaboration between Disney and various developers, including Shea Homes and Davidson Communities. While Disney does not own the land, they are responsible for crafting the overarching narrative and experience of the community.

  • Location: Rancho Mirage, Coachella Valley
  • Developers: Shea Homes, Davidson Communities, Woodbridge Pacific Group
  • Starting price: Approximately $1.3 million for homes

Residential Features

Cotino’s first development phase will include over 300 homes, with plans for more than 1,900 units overall. The housing options will consist of single-family homes, condos, and spaces for residents aged 55 and older. Bilby emphasizes that these residences are designed for year-round living, incorporating subtle Disney-themed details instead of overt decorations.

Amenities and Artisan Club

Residents have the option to join the Artisan Club, which provides exclusive amenities. This includes a restaurant named Architects Fork, a bar called Plot Twist, and various recreational facilities. The Artisan Club also features Cotino Bay, a man-made water feature where residents can swim and kayak.

  • Table-service restaurant: Architects Fork
  • Outdoor bar: Plot Twist
  • Membership fee: $20,000 initiation, varying annual dues

The Artisan Club membership offers two tiers. The Resident Membership caters to individuals and their immediate family, while the Extended Membership allows access for additional family members, such as grandparents and grandchildren. Both tiers have specific annual dues associated with them.

Future Plans for Storyliving by Disney

While Cotino is still under development, Disney is already planning a second Storyliving community, Asteria, near Raleigh, North Carolina. This new project aims to accommodate around 4,000 residents, with sales expected to commence in 2027.

Disney’s move into the housing market signifies its commitment to creating unique living experiences that resonate with its legacy while appealing to the lifestyles of modern residents.
