The Shift from Public Relations to Comedy

McNally, at the age of 30, felt discontent in her career as a public relations professional. Initially, she aspired to be a nurse, inspired by her mother, Pat. Doubts from her mother regarding the nursing profession’s reputation, however, led McNally to pursue a career in comedy instead.

A Life-Changing Realization

McNally has candidly shared her long struggle with an eating disorder, calling it a pivotal moment in her life. She remarked, “I was kind of circling the plug hole of an eating disorder for a very long time.” This realization compelled her to leave her PR job and move in with her mother, allowing her to immerse herself in her passion for comedy.

The Blessing in Disguise

Reflecting on her experiences, McNally now interprets her battle with an eating disorder as a positive force. She considers it a blessing that prompted her to reassess her life choices. Many individuals face challenges related to disordered eating, but she believes recovery can lead to new and fulfilling pathways.

Beginning Her Comedy Journey

During her recovery process, McNally started a blog titled “Eat The Pastry.” This blog served as the foundation of her burgeoning comedy career. Its growing popularity led to a column in Life Magazine and garnered the attention of Úna McKevitt, who invited her to appear in the play “Singlehood,” further advancing her entrance into the comedy scene.

Cultivating Her Comedy Career

McNally credits comedian PJ Gallagher with significantly influencing her development as a stand-up performer. Touring alongside Gallagher enabled her to gain confidence and hone her material. By the end of the tour, she had produced approximately 20 minutes of original stand-up content. Her distinctive voice, combined with the rising demand for female comedians, has hastened her ascent in the industry.
