Marcel Hug Claims Seventh Victory
Hug, a seasoned athlete from Thurgau, set his sights on winning the famed marathon. Following his strong start, he quickly positioned himself at the front of the race. He maintained his lead throughout, finishing with an impressive time of 1:30:16.
His closest competitor, British athlete David Weir, crossed the finish line almost four minutes later. Hug’s victory this year marks his seventh win in New York, adding to his previous triumphs in 2013, 2016, 2017, 2021, 2022, and now 2023.
“Winning here means so much to me,” said the 39-year-old athlete. This victory is particularly special following his fall in the previous year.
Debrunner Takes Third Place
In the women’s wheelchair race, American Susannah Scaroni delivered a commanding performance, winning with ease. Swiss athlete Catherine Debrunner finished strong but narrowly missed second place against Tatyana McFadden.
- Catherine Debrunner’s Finish Time: 1:47:56
- Debrunner’s Ranking: 3rd place
- Tatyana McFadden’s Finish: 2nd place, just two seconds ahead of Debrunner
- Manuela Schär: 4th place
Debrunner’s performance was competitive, but she was unable to keep pace with Scaroni and settled for the third spot. Her efforts are commendable, particularly in such a prestigious competition.
This year’s marathon highlighted the remarkable talent in wheelchair racing, reaffirming the athletes’ commitment to excellence in the sport.
