Broncos Sideline Four Players, Including Pat Surtain II, for Sunday Game
The Denver Broncos will face the Houston Texans without several key players in their upcoming Week 9 matchup. Notably absent will be two All-Pros: defensive standout Pat Surtain II and wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr.
Injury Updates for Broncos vs. Texans
Pat Surtain II, the 2024 defensive player of the year, is sidelined due to a pectoral injury. Similarly, Marvin Mims Jr. is ruled out following a concussion sustained during a kick return in the final moments of last week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. Also out are tight end Nate Adkins (knee) and safety P.J. Locke (neck).
Mims’ Concussion After Cowboys Game
Marvin Mims’ absence is particularly disappointing considering he suffered the concussion while the Broncos were leading by 20 points. His injury stemmed from a failed communication regarding player substitutions during special teams play. Head coach Sean Payton confirmed this, noting a mix-up that resulted in Mims remaining in the game instead of being replaced by rookie running back RJ Harvey.
Players’ Practice Status
- Pat Surtain II: Did not practice.
- Marvin Mims Jr.: Did not practice.
- Nate Adkins: Did not practice.
- P.J. Locke: Limited participation early in the week but did not practice Friday.
Despite their injuries, neither Surtain nor Adkins has been placed on injured reserve, suggesting the team hopes for their return by November 30 for a game against Washington.
Potential Game-time Decisions
Newly signed tight end Marcedes Lewis may be activated for Sunday’s game. Payton expressed confidence in Lewis’ readiness, highlighting the need for additional depth at the tight end position.
Defensive Addition of Jonah Elliss
Jonah Elliss recently returned to the field after missing two games due to a shoulder injury. His performance against Dallas marked a significant rebound as he played a season-high 48.5% of the snaps. Elliss stated that he is fully recovered and is ready for the challenge against the Texans’ quarterback C.J. Stroud.
Elliss emphasized the importance of smart rushing strategies, particularly considering Stroud’s ability to escape pressure. “You can’t go into it thinking just, like, ‘cage rush him.’ We hate the term ‘cage rush,’” said Elliss.
As the Broncos prepare for their game against Houston, the absence of key players will test their depth and resilience. Fans can stay updated with the latest news and analysis by signing up for the Broncos Insider.
