Benson Kipruto and Hellen Obiri emerged as champions in the 2025 TCS New York City Marathon, showcasing exceptional performances in their respective races.
Benson Kipruto’s Victory
Kipruto, representing Kenya, clinched the men’s title with a narrow margin. He crossed the finish line in 2:08:09, outpacing Alexander Mutiso by less than one second. The two competitors distanced themselves from the chase pack as they approached Mile 24.
In a dramatic finish, Kipruto surged ahead late in the race. However, Mutiso made a strong sprint in the final 50 meters but ultimately fell short.
Hellen Obiri Sets Women’s Course Record
On the women’s side, Hellen Obiri also from Kenya, claimed victory and shattered the course record. She completed the race in 2 hours, 19 minutes, and 51 seconds. This victory follows her previous win in 2023.
Obiri began the race alongside 2022 champion Sharon Lokedi. The decisive moment came in the last mile when Obiri increased her pace, allowing her to finish well ahead. She surpassed the former course record of 2:22:31, which was set by Margaret Okayo in 2003.
