Tomlin Supports Defensive Coordinator Despite Steelers’ Struggles
Following a disappointing performance, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin defended defensive coordinator Teryl Austin amidst ongoing struggles within the team’s defensive unit. This comes after the Steelers allowed at least 30 points for the fourth time in seven games, following their 35-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Tomlin Backs Defensive Coordinator Amid Team’s Challenges
Tomlin expressed confidence in Austin’s capabilities, stating, “He’s very capable. He’s very thorough.” Despite their failures, Tomlin affirmed that they will continue to work together to improve. He made it clear that he will not assume defensive playcalling duties, emphasizing the need for the current team arrangement to enhance their performance.
Defensive Performance Under Scrutiny
The Steelers defense, touted as the highest paid in the league, has underperformed. In recent outings, the team allowed a season-high of 360 passing yards against the Packers, including three touchdown passes and a streak of 20 consecutive completions by quarterback Jordan Love. Over the past few games, four quarterbacks have achieved season-high yardage against Pittsburgh.
Upcoming Challenges
- Next game: Week 9 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts
- Colts’ offensive statistics:
- Average points: 33.8 (league-leading)
- Average yards: 385.3
In contrast, the Steelers rank poorly in several defensive metrics:
- Passing yards per game: 273.3 (32nd in the NFL)
- Total yards allowed: 386 (30th)
- Third-down conversion percentage: 41.84% (24th)
- Points allowed per game: 25.0 (22nd)
Tomlin maintained that the issues on defense need to be tackled on the field rather than through discussions. He noted a lack of production in critical moments during games and that players must elevate their performance to secure victories.
Injury Updates and Team Adjustments
The Steelers will be without starting strong safety DeShon Elliott, who hyperextended his knee during the game. He is currently classified as “week-to-week.” In response to Elliott’s injury, the team is evaluating several veteran safeties, including Vonn Bell and Eddie Jackson.
Tomlin is also open to pursuing trade options as the deadline approaches, stating, “We’re always buyers.” To address the current defensive issues, the Steelers signed safety Jabrill Peppers earlier in the season.
As the team prepares for the next game, Tomlin and the coaching staff aim to tighten their defense and revive their competitiveness in the league, acknowledging that growth and improvement is essential moving forward.
