Chiefs Elevate Former 1st-Round Pick at Running Back for Bills Clash

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a significant move by elevating running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire from the practice squad to the 53-man roster. This decision comes ahead of their Week 9 NFL matchup against the Buffalo Bills, set to take place in Orchard Park, New York.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s Journey

Edwards-Helaire, drafted as the 32nd overall pick in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, has had a tumultuous career. Initially selected from LSU, he experienced a promising rookie season, rushing for 803 yards and four touchdowns. Notably, he recorded 161 rushing yards against the Bills during a 26-17 Chiefs victory in 2020.

2023 Season Challenges

Unfortunately, his subsequent seasons were marred by injuries, leading to a decline in production. Over his three years with the Chiefs, Edwards-Helaire has participated in 48 games, starting 32, and has accumulated 1,891 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns.

After being waived by the Chiefs in December last year, he briefly played with the New Orleans Saints but returned to Kansas City in late August following his release during training camp.

Current Team Dynamics

Edwards-Helaire’s elevation was primarily due to the absence of first-string running back Isiah Pacheco, who is currently sidelined due to an injury sustained in the previous week’s game against the Washington Commanders. With him out, Edwards-Helaire will bolster the Chiefs’ backfield, joining starters Kareem Hunt and rookie Brashard Smith.
