A significant structural incident occurred in Rome’s city center when part of the Torre dei Conti collapsed during renovation work. The tower, located near Largo Corrado Ricci by the Imperial Fora, experienced a second avalanche of debris shortly after the initial collapse, triggering a massive dust cloud.
Emergency Response and Casualties
Rescue operations began promptly. Firefighters managed to extract a 64-year-old worker from the rubble. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition due to a head injury. Another worker remains trapped under the debris. Reports indicate that he is conscious, but concerns for his health have escalated after the second collapse.
Challenges Faced by Emergency Services
The situation grew more complicated as the second collapse affected the rescue team. Fortunately, all firefighters on site were unharmed. In addition to those injured, two other individuals suffered minor injuries but declined hospital transport.
The firefighters deployed three operational teams, including two aerial platforms and specialized units. Traffic in the surrounding area has been suspended to facilitate rescue efforts.
