Part of Rome’s Torre dei Conti Collapses in City Center

A significant structural incident occurred in Rome’s city center when part of the Torre dei Conti collapsed during renovation work. The tower, located near Largo Corrado Ricci by the Imperial Fora, experienced a second avalanche of debris shortly after the initial collapse, triggering a massive dust cloud.

Emergency Response and Casualties

Rescue operations began promptly. Firefighters managed to extract a 64-year-old worker from the rubble. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition due to a head injury. Another worker remains trapped under the debris. Reports indicate that he is conscious, but concerns for his health have escalated after the second collapse.

Challenges Faced by Emergency Services

The situation grew more complicated as the second collapse affected the rescue team. Fortunately, all firefighters on site were unharmed. In addition to those injured, two other individuals suffered minor injuries but declined hospital transport.

The firefighters deployed three operational teams, including two aerial platforms and specialized units. Traffic in the surrounding area has been suspended to facilitate rescue efforts.

Investigation Underway

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse. The Carabinieri from the Piazza Venezia command have cordoned off the area. They will work alongside the Labor Inspectorate and local health technicians to determine the circumstances surrounding this incident.

  • Two workers were involved in the rescue effort and required assistance.
  • Eleven workers were reportedly on-site during the collapse.
  • An investigation has been opened for negligence.

Official Reactions

Alessandro Giuli, the Minister of Culture, visited the site to assess the situation. The Prosecution of Rome, led by Deputy Prosecutor Antonino Di Mai and Prosecutor Mario Dovinola, has initiated an inquiry into the incident.

Francesco Rocca, President of the Lazio Region, expressed his condolences for the injured worker on social media, highlighting the efforts of the emergency services.

Historical Significance of the Torre dei Conti

The Torre dei Conti is not just a construction site; it represents a critical piece of Rome’s history, commissioned by Pope Innocent III. The architectural marvel continues to be a focal point of cultural and historical significance in the city.

As investigations proceed, the focus remains on ensuring the safety of workers and understanding the causes behind this alarming structural failure.
