As Typhoon Kalmaegi approaches the eastern Philippines, authorities have ordered the evacuation of over 70,000 residents from coastal communities. This precaution comes in anticipation of severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous storm surges.

Forecast and Impact
Forecasters predict that Typhoon Kalmaegi will make landfall on either Guiuan or its nearby municipalities. Wind gusts could reach up to 150 km/h (93 mph), and storm surges could reach heights of 3 meters (10 feet). Authorities have also advised fishermen to refrain from going out to sea in the east-central region.
Guiuan has a history of being struck by powerful storms, notably in November 2013 when a devastating typhoon left over 7,300 people dead or missing and displaced more than four million others.

Kalmaegi is expected to continue westward overnight, hitting central island provinces such as Cebu, which is still recovering from a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that occurred in September.
