Typhoon Kalmaegi Forces Thousands to Evacuate as It Nears the Philippines
As Typhoon Kalmaegi approaches the eastern Philippines, authorities have ordered the evacuation of over 70,000 residents from coastal communities. This precaution comes in anticipation of severe weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous storm surges.
Evacuations and Safety Measures
Residents have been instructed to leave their homes in vulnerable areas, particularly in the coastal towns of Guiuan and Salcedo on Samar Island, as well as Mercedes in Camarines Norte province. Evacuation centers and structurally sound buildings have been designated for those seeking refuge.
- Over 70,000 people affected
 - Evacuations primarily in coastal towns
 - Emergency services on high alert

Forecast and Impact
Forecasters predict that Typhoon Kalmaegi will make landfall on either Guiuan or its nearby municipalities. Wind gusts could reach up to 150 km/h (93 mph), and storm surges could reach heights of 3 meters (10 feet). Authorities have also advised fishermen to refrain from going out to sea in the east-central region.
Guiuan has a history of being struck by powerful storms, notably in November 2013 when a devastating typhoon left over 7,300 people dead or missing and displaced more than four million others.
Ongoing Challenges
Kalmaegi is expected to continue westward overnight, hitting central island provinces such as Cebu, which is still recovering from a magnitude 6.9 earthquake that occurred in September.
The Philippines faces a significant challenge each year, encountering around 20 typhoons and storms. Climate scientists have noted that these storms are intensifying, largely due to human-driven climate change.
Historical Context and Preparedness
The region’s susceptibility to natural disasters is further compounded by its geological features. The archipelago experiences frequent earthquakes and is home to more than a dozen active volcanoes, making it one of the most disaster-prone nations in the world.
As Typhoon Kalmaegi approaches, communities are urged to remain vigilant and adhere to evacuation orders to ensure their safety.
