World Court Alerts to Potential War Crimes by Paramilitary Forces in Sudan Amid Escalating Famine Concerns
The International Criminal Court (ICC) is taking action to address potential war crimes by paramilitary forces in Sudan, particularly in the Darfur region. This comes after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control of El-Fasher, a significant government stronghold, resulting in widespread violence and civilian casualties.
ICC Investigation into War Crimes in Sudan
On Monday, the ICC announced efforts to gather and preserve evidence related to alleged crimes in El-Fasher. The prosecutor’s office indicated that these events could represent war crimes and crimes against humanity, part of a disturbing pattern of violence affecting the entire Darfur region.
Violence Amid Famine Concerns
- The RSF recently captured El-Fasher after a prolonged siege lasting 18 months.
 - Witnesses have reported that RSF fighters conducted house-to-house raids, killing civilians and perpetrating sexual assaults.
 - The World Health Organization has documented at least 460 deaths resulting from an attack on a hospital.

The situation is dire, as the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) highlighted significant famine risks in two regions of Sudan, including El-Fasher and Kadugli in South Kordofan. This crisis exacerbates the ongoing humanitarian disaster triggered by the conflict that started in April 2023 between the military and RSF.
Global Response and Legal Implications
Karim Khan, the chief prosecutor of the ICC, previously informed the Security Council that both government forces and the RSF may be implicated in war crimes, crimes against humanity, or even genocide in Darfur. Although Khan has temporarily stepped down from his role amid allegations of misconduct, the ICC’s investigations continue.
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan underscores the urgent need for international attention and intervention. As violence escalates, the prospect of accountability for atrocities remains a critical concern on the global stage.
