Medieval Tower in Rome Partially Collapses Leaving One Worker Injured and Another Trapped

A medieval tower in Rome partially collapsed on Monday, injuring one worker critically and leaving another trapped. The incident occurred during renovation work on the Torre dei Conti, located near the Roman Forum.

Details of the Collapse

Authorities reported that the structure experienced a significant collapse just before noon. Hundreds of tourists nearby witnessed the scene unfold as firefighters raced to rescue the trapped worker.

Rescue Efforts

  • Firefighters utilized a mobile ladder to reach the upper levels of the tower.
  • One worker was rescued but is currently in critical condition.
  • A second worker remains trapped, with efforts hampered by further partial collapses.
  • Three other workers were rescued unharmed.

Firefighter spokesman Luca Cari confirmed the ongoing rescue operation. As they worked, another section of the tower collapsed, leading to a cloud of debris that forced firefighters to retreat.

Witness Accounts

Queen Paglinawan, who was working at a nearby gelato parlor, recalled hearing two loud noises. “I then saw the tower collapse in a diagonal way,” she said.

German student Viktoria Braeu was passing by when the second collapse occurred. “We were just walking to get some food and then it just started erupting,” she stated.

Historical Background of Torre dei Conti

The Torre dei Conti was originally built in the 13th century by Pope Innocent III as a family residence. The tower sustained damage from a major earthquake in 1349 and has faced subsequent collapses throughout its history.

Official Presence

Rome Mayor Roberto Gualtieri and Italian Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli were present at the site but did not make official statements to the press regarding the incident.
