By her late teens, she had launched a professional career as a session singer in the vibrant Muscle Shoals music scene. During the late 1960s, she gained recognition as a member of the backing group Southern Comfort, providing vocals for artists such as Elvis Presley and Percy Sledge.

Joining the Grateful Dead

In the early 1970s, Donna relocated to San Francisco, where she met her husband, keyboardist Keith Godchaux. Their shared passion for music led them to the Grateful Dead. Donna recounted a memorable moment when they decided to approach band members about joining. Her persistence and connection with Jerry Garcia ultimately paved the way for both of them to become part of the legendary band.
