Ryan Odom Returns as UVA Coach, Completing 7-Year Journey
Ryan Odom has returned to the University of Virginia (UVA) as head coach, completing a transformative seven-year journey. This marks an important phase for UVA, which is recovering from a challenging 15-17 season. Odom faces a significant task in integrating twelve new players into the team.
Odom’s Proven Track Record
Odom’s coaching journey gained momentum during his tenure at UMBC. In his first season, his team experienced an impressive turnaround, winning 14 more games than the previous year. By his second season, the Retrievers became notable participants in the NCAA Tournament.
According to former player, Sherburne, Odom possesses a remarkable ability to enhance teams, regardless of their initial performance. “He can take a team that’s either good or bad and make them better,” Sherburne stated. Odom has also had success at Utah State and VCU, leading both programs to the NCAA Tournament.
Support from Former Players
- Brandon Horvath, a former player from Odom’s UMBC squad, recently visited UVA.
 - During this visit, he received a substantial amount of UVA gear, highlighting Odom’s emphasis on team spirit.
 - Horvath currently plays professionally in Europe but remains connected with Odom, viewing him as more than just a coach.

At Horvath’s wedding, Odom was in attendance, showcasing the close relationships he builds with players. Horvath described Odom as family, noting his significant impact on his personal growth.
The Man Behind the Coach
Odom remains grounded despite his accomplishments. Friends and colleagues, including assistant coach Bryce Crawford, admire his humility. “He’s such a normal, regular person that he doesn’t think too much of himself,” Crawford explained.
Interestingly, Odom seldom reflects on his previous victories over UVA during private conversations. Instead, he maintains a respectful admiration for UVA’s past successes and its current journey.
A Humorous Encounter
A recent team outing revealed Odom’s light-hearted nature when his family showcased memorabilia from their past achievements. A framed cover commemorating UMBC’s accomplishment in the 2018 NCAA Tournament sparked laughter among the current coaching staff.
As Odom embarks on this new chapter with UVA, excitement brews among fans and former players alike. “The next chapter is going to be about Odom taking Virginia to the promised land,” Horvath predicted. The anticipation for what lies ahead is palpable.
