Celtics Consider Trading Derrick White for No. 3 Pick to Avoid Repeater Tax
As discussions surrounding potential trades heat up, the Boston Celtics are reportedly considering moving guard Derrick White to avoid financial penalties associated with the NBA’s repeater tax. This proposal, introduced by Bleacher Report’s NBA salary cap analyst Eric Pincus, suggests a three-team deal involving the Houston Rockets and Brooklyn Nets.
The Proposed Trade Framework
The trade would involve White joining the Rockets. In return, the Celtics would receive:
- Reed Sheppard, a former third overall pick.
 - Jalen Wilson, a forward from Brooklyn.
 - A future first-round pick from Houston.

Additionally, the Rockets would obtain White and Haywood Highsmith, while the Nets would receive Fred VanVleet and a 2027 first-rounder from Houston.
Financial Pressures on the Celtics
Pincus emphasizes that the Celtics might be facing serious financial challenges after recent roster adjustments. The team is currently about $12 million over the luxury tax threshold. The NBA’s repeater tax doubles penalties for teams exceeding payroll limits, creating additional strain for franchises not achieving postseason success. Pincus notes the Celtics could save nearly $39.5 million in taxes by moving below this threshold.
“In a down year, without serious postseason goals, now is an ideal time to drop below,” he suggested. Achieving this could earn the Celtics an estimated $12 million rebate from the league.
Long-Term Prospects: White vs. Sheppard
Derrick White, who turns 31 soon, has experienced a dip in performance, averaging 15.0 points with a shooting percentage of only 30.8%. Sheppard, at just 21, has shown promise, posting early season averages of 10.4 points and 3.4 assists.
Pincus argues that trading White now allows the Celtics to infuse youth into their roster while potentially cultivating Sheppard’s talent. He described Sheppard as a cost-controlled option that aligns with Boston’s future plans.
Resistance to Trade White
Despite the compelling financial rationale behind this trade scenario, Boston remains wary of parting with White. Reports indicate that the team is demanding a hefty return, reminiscent of the significant package the New York Knicks offered for Mikal Bridges.
White is under contract through the 2026-27 season, making it challenging for Boston to consider a trade lightly. Previous offers have included valuable assets, but the Celtics rejected them as they seek to maintain stability with key players like Jaylen Brown and White.
However, should the Celtics struggle as the season progresses, the trade proposal by Pincus may transform from theory into necessity, reshaping the team’s future dynamics.
