Pistons Star Isaiah Stewart Embraces Farming Passion

Isaiah Stewart, a power forward for the Detroit Pistons, has embraced a surprising passion for farming. Nestled in Temecula, California, his 28-acre farm, named “Paraiso De La Luz” or “Paradise of Light,” reflects his dedication to this newfound venture.

From Basketball Courts to Farming

At 24 years old, Stewart’s connection to farming evolved despite his unlikely beginnings. Growing up in Rochester, New York, he couldn’t imagine himself as a farmer. Influenced by his father Dela, who immigrated from Jamaica in the late 1970s, Stewart learned the value of hard work and nurturing plants. His father’s love for gardening instilled a respect for agriculture in Stewart.

A New Journey

In August 2024, after extensive property searching, Stewart found his ideal farmland. Located in the scenic hills of Temecula, he initially purchased 18 acres, which he later expanded. The land, surrounded by farms producing citrus and avocados, sold Stewart on its potential.

Investing Time and Effort

Stewart has made significant investments to transform the land. He grows an array of crops, including:

  • Citrus trees
  • Avocado trees
  • Finger limes
  • Chirimoyas
  • Pomegranates

Visitors to his farm are greeted by a beautiful wall of cypress trees leading to rows of lush fruit trees. Stewart actively works on the farm, operating machinery and tending the crops himself.

Learning and Growth

Farming has provided Stewart with a sense of peace away from the court. He constantly educates himself about various crops, and his passion has connected him with mentors like Sam Cobb, a noted date farmer. Stewart is eager to grow date palms, understanding the challenges that come with this demanding crop.

Connection to Legacy

The decline of Black farmers in America highlights the importance of Stewart’s involvement in agriculture. With less than 47,000 Black farmers in the U.S. as of 2022, Stewart’s efforts take on added significance. His commitment is not merely to farming but to leaving a meaningful legacy.

Reflecting on his farming journey, Stewart expresses gratitude for the land and the lessons it offers. This passion not only enriches his life but also prepares him for a future beyond basketball.
